VOLUNTEER On OUR TRAILS, RIVERS, and PRESERVES:

1. Water Quality Monitoring

Every spring marks the start of our data collection season for water quality throughout the region, and we always need more volunteer help. Water quality monitoring volunteers attend a training led by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and then collect water samples and data every other Tuesday morning from mid-May through mid-September. Sign up to volunteer for the 2026 season here, and if you have questions please email toby@prlt.org.

2. Fish Count

We are working in collaboration with the University of Southern Maine and the State of Maine’s Department of Marine Resources to support ongoing research on the largest fish migration from Casco Bay. You can support these efforts by becoming a Fish Count volunteer. Volunteers count fish as they enter Highland Lake in Westbrook for 30 minutes at a time mid-May to early June. Sign up to volunteer for the 2026 season here, and if you have questions please email toby@prlt.org.

3. Trail Work

We always have exciting projects happening on our preserves during the field season (spring, summer and fall). Volunteers help create trails, build kiosks, post new signage, and perform trail maintenance throughout the region. You can volunteer on your own or with a small group, whatever fits your interest and schedule. For trail work, sign up to volunteer here.

4. Invasives Removal

New this summer! Abigail, our Maine Conservation Corps Environmental Steward, will be leading weekly invasive plant cleanups at the following times:

  • Wednesday evenings 5:30-7:00 p.m.

  • Sunday mornings 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

We will be exploring a new location each week—including Rivermeadow Nature Preserve, Black Brook Preserve, Lowell Preserve, Little River Preserve, and Mill Brook Preserve—and each of them will have a different array of invasive species. This is a great opportunity to learn more about invasive species identification and ways to remove them! Sign up to volunteer here, and you will receive an email from Abigail each week to confirm the location.

VOLUNTEER IN Outreach & Engagement

1. Event Volunteer

We are continually expanding our outreach events. Volunteers can help us with set-up, check-in, taking photos, and general outreach support.

Please fill out our volunteer form if you are interested in becoming an Outreach Volunteer. Sign up to volunteer here.

2. Walk Leader

Do you love one of our preserves and think more people should know about it? Sign up to lead a walk! We're recruiting volunteers who are excited about showing off the beauty of PRLT's trails with our community year-round.

Interested in signing up? Sign up to volunteer here.

3. Photographers and/or Videographers
Photos and videos help us tell the story of the beautiful lands and water we conserve, and the wide variety of people who enjoy them. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy taking photos and video and want to spend time visiting our preserves, capturing the different seasons, and joining us during our events. Sign up to volunteer here.

4. Office Volunteers
Volunteer to help with mailings a few times per year. Sign up to volunteer here.

VOLUNTEER ON A COMMITTEE

Interested in being a volunteer leader with PRLT? Join a committee and be part of the inner workings of our land trust. Our Committees are:

1. Stewardship Committee
Ensure that PRLT’s publicly accessible preserves and trail systems are safe, well-maintained, welcoming, and stewarded to a high standard. Guide stewardship priorities and investments that protect ecological integrity and enhance public access.

2. Lands Committee
Ensure that all proposed land protection projects are evaluated in a consistent, rigorous, and mission-driven manner. Review potential projects using PRLT’s criteria worksheet and ensure that acquisitions advance the goals of the Conservation Plan.

3. Leadership Development Committee
Ensure the board has a plan for training board members each year; design leadership training for new and ongoing board members.

4. Community Engagement and Fundraising Committee
Advise the board of directors and staff on effectively and equitably communicating and engaging people in the Land Trust’s mission and work to raise the funds necessary to protect and care for the Presumpscot Region.

5. Finance Committee
Oversee the organization's finances and ensure proper bookkeeping, accounting processes, and controls are in place.

We ask everyone who is interested in joining the Board of Directors to first be a part of a committee. Committees include: 1. Engagement Committee - help build financial resources; 2. Finance - review financial reports; 3. Leadership Development - design trainings for the Board of Directors. Click here to let us know you are interested.
