Rivermeadow Nature Preserve

Westbrook, 44 acres

Rivermeadow Nature Preserve was conserved in Fall 2023. It consists of 3,300 feet of Presumpscot River shoreline and 30 acres of forested wetlands, some of the only remaining wetlands near downtown Westbrook.

The shoreline, wetlands, and forest provide essential habitats for hundreds of species of migrating birds, pollinators, reptiles, and amphibians. Many of these species are quickly declining due to habitat loss, such as spring peepers, spotted salamanders, leopard frogs, and wood turtles. This land will forever provide much-needed wildlife habitat. This conservation area is located within one mile of 8,000 residents (40% of the residents of Westbrook).

This Preserve is in the homeland of the Wabanaki People. We respectfully acknowledge these People of the Dawn–past, present and future–and their connection to these lands and waters.

The preserve also features a StoryWalk®, supported by United Way of Greater Portland and the Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook. This bilingual installation displays children’s books in English alongside a rotating second language—Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Arabic—offering a unique and engaging experience for families.
