Lowell Preserve – Windham, 308 acres

Lowell Preserve is owned by the Town of Windham and is forever protected with a Conservation Easement held by the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust. This preserve is co-managed by the Town and the Land Trust and is an amazing community asset, offering hundreds of acres of wildlife habitat and diverse recreation. There is something for everyone here with almost 6 miles of trail, ranging from moderate to difficult, through scenic forest.

The land of the Preserve offers interesting forest, topography, and geology. The views change with the seasons as some areas are dominated by evergreen hemlock, while beech, maple, or oak are more prevalent in others. There are both permanent and intermittent streams within the Preserve that run in the valleys of the gradual hills. Unlike many of our other Preserves, rocks are ubiquitous here - from exposed ledge to small exposed stones to large glacial erratic boulders. Keep a close eye out for interesting granite formations near the trails.

Thank you so much to the over 100 supporters who generously donated to the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust in order to forever conserve this land under a conservation easement. Special thanks to Gorham Savings Bank for the matching challenge grant, Davis Conservation Foundation, and Casco Bay Estuary Partnership’s Habitat Protection Fund.

This Preserve is in the homeland of the Wabanaki People. We respectfully acknowledge these People of the Dawn–past, present and future–and their connection to these lands and waters.

About the Lowell PRESERVE Trails

The trailhead for the Preserve is at the East Windham Fire Station on Falmouth Road.

The main trail area consists of two loops (Blue and Red) of wide, easy trail. Each loop is about 1.5 miles.

There are also two networks of “Technical Trail” in the northern part of the Preserve. These trails are more narrow and cover steeper, more difficult terrain. They are ideal for mountain biking and trail running, but are great for a longer hike as well.

Presumpscot Regional Land Trust holds a conservation easement on the Lowell Preserve.
